If you haven't been to our online store lately, now is the time to check it out!

http://www.sandiegopretzel.com/buy-pretzels-online.html

We recently added our newest soft pretzel offering, the Munich Pretzel. This pretzel has the same amazing flavor and freshness of our Twisted Traditional recipe, but in a more German shape with a wide bottom and slit. This addition, in the classic "Oktoberfest" shape, is sure to be a hit with pretzel fans everywhere!

Another new item in our online store, is that any bag of pretzels can now have a 1.4 oz Jar of Stone Ground Mustard added to any pretzel bag order. This is the same great California made mustard that we include with each of our Jumbo Bavarian Gift Box orders.

Prost!

Getting to know our staff

It’s important to know every worker, and we would like you to get to know them as well.

Karla Moya

Intern in Social Media and Marketing

She wakes up at 7 am and it takes her about 19 min to get to work. She likes making tours and being creative, but she hates sitting all day long and not having a lot of customers, something that she would definitely change, if she could.

One wish she would ask for is to have her own car, if she could be any animal she would be a monkey, an elephant or a dog, three things she can´t live without are water, food and a nice view, she believes in aliens, and her favorite drink is a mixture of cranberry and orange juice. The thing that makes her angry is when people don´t listen, are lazy or do things wrong, but don´t worry something funny will make her smile.

Jaime Viera

Pretzel Roller

Jaime came across with this job because he was looking for one, he does like everything about it except for rolling the pretzels. Unjustness makes him angry, but try to make him mad and he will laugh. He wishes to travel, if he could be any animal he would like to be a monkey, his favorite drink is water, if he won 20 million dollars he would help his family but keep some money for himself, and three things he could not live without are water, music and food, but he doesn’t believes in aliens with the proof that he now has.

Leticia Martinez

Pretzel Roller

Leticia knew that she wanted to roll pretzels when she saw others doing the job, and she enjoys rolling the pretzels. For Leticia the worst thing about her job is dipping pretzels, and she wants to eliminate that process. Leticia dislikes lies, but everything puts a smile in her face.

One wish that Leticia has is to grow old and healthy, her favorite drink is water, she couldn’t live without her car, and she also believes in aliens.

If Leticia won 20 million dollars she would like to help her family.

Leticia wakes up at 5 in the morning and it takes her 2 hours to get to work.

Getting to know our staff

It’s important to know every worker, and we would like you to get to know them as well.

Fernando Cruz

Convention Center Director

Fernando came across with his actual job when a worker in our company brought him to visit the place. He likes his job, but he dislikes dealing with some of the challenging items at the convention center, if he could be any animal he would like to be a lion, his favorite drink is red bull, and he claims that the weirdest thing that you would find in his refrigerator would be finding it empty. For Fernando his wife, daughter and job are very important, and he wishes to be here as long as possible. If he won 20 million in the lottery he would buy a house, a car and a boat. And he is a believer in aliens, specially since his wife´s family saw something last New Year´s eve.

It’s important to know every worker, and we would like you to get to know them as well.

William Joering

General Manager

Bill knew that he wanted to work in this company since he interviewed for the job, and he loves selling a product that he believes in, but as in any job there’s somethings that he doesn’t like, and that’s the convention center and making packaging easier. Everyday he wakes up at 6 a.m. and after 14 min. of driving he arrives to work.

Bill likes sunsets at the beach, his favorite drink is ICY TEA, the weirdest thing you will find in his refrigerator is oyster sauce, three things he cannot live without are coffee, sunshine and the ocean, and if he could be any animal he would be a Kodiak bear, but he doesn’t like the price of gas. Bill’s one wish is to win the lottery, and if he won the 20 million prize he would disappear. And yes, he does believe in aliens.

Harris Golden

“Pretzelogist”

Why pretzels?

Right after giving up cheffing, our dear Pretzelogist wanted to have his own business in San Diego, so he thought about making pretzels, the one thing that he enjoys making.

How is he?

He likes doing tours, working with all the employees, and to look at a nice garden or a beautiful scene, a good joke will always make him smile, but he dislikes out of control superstition, dealing with government regulations and he wishes that he could never worry about money issues in business and that there was world peace.

Things you didn't know about him

If he won 20 million dollars he would take a trip around the world with his family, and maybe, who knows, his employees. The weirdest things that you will ever find in his fridge are batteries, the three things he can’t live without are food, air and companionship and he do believes in aliens, he says “I can’t imagine given the size of the universe, as we know it, we are the only ones out there”

A day in the Pretzelogist life

He gets up at 7 o’clock, gets ready and in 30 minutes he gets to work.

It’s that time of the year again! Get your anime costumes and light sabers ready because the San Diego ComicCon is right around the corner! We’re preparing the finest ingredients and stocking up our pretzel carts for all the twisted people at the convention!

While watching an episode of the hilarious show, Futurama, we noticed something particular about a couple of scenes. He spotted our soft pretzels being enjoyed by Leela along with a pretzel cart and employees during Comic-Con in the year of 3010! Leela sure has good taste in food.

So, like Futurama, don’t forget to visit Comic-Con, grab one of our soft pretzels, and of course, wear your favorite character’s costume!

A few weeks ago a new addition to our bakery was painted onto the side wall of the building. Our team is so excited about this newly added element! We had the pretzel mural done by Dano of Dano Designs- a local artist that is well known for window paintings throughout Southern California. Now, our new Giant Traditional Bavarian Pretzel can help us welcome our will call and walk in customers! While at the same time the mural adds to our overall fun, and approachable theme. So, if you are ever in the neighborhood, come over and take a look! You might end up leaving with some yummy, twisted treats!

Certified Gluten Enriched

By Harris Golden

My recent visit to the Natural Products Expo West 2011 has been for me the straw that broke the camel’s back.  Oh!  I’m sorry.   Straw, camel, that’s old hat.  I’ll start over.  My recent visit to the Natural Products Expo West 2011 was the tipping point.

I really need to say something about food fads that turn us into automatons chasing one food after another.   Either we “must not” eat this or we “have to” eat that.   Sometimes the hysteria can be fatal for an entire food industry (Google: Cranberry Scare of 1959).The following is a list of food products that in the past have been labeled “No Good For You!”: beef, pork, chicken (especially dark meat), dairy products, pasta, soy, spinach, eggs, peanuts, butter, sugar, salt, coconuts, and the list goes on and on.  Oh!  I almost forgot the beverages: can’t drink soda, tap water, milk, all alcoholic beverages, coffee, and tea.   We’re pretty much guaranteed that at least one or two of these products listed will soon be back in favor.  Perhaps it will be coffee?  No doubt, it dehydrates and over-stimulates.  Or will it be salt?  Watch that high blood pressure!

Want to know the latest food fad?   GLUTEN   Everywhere I turned at the Natural Products Expo a sign was proclaiming “Gluten Free”.    There was a plethora of gluten-free cookbooks, gluten-free breads, muffins, pastries, pastas, and pizzas.  There’s an entire new industry that certifies food companies so they can proudly display their influential signage:  “Certified Gluten-Free”.  There was even a gluten-free soft pretzel at the expo that tasted like a box of cornstarch.  That   pretzel was my tipping point.   It should be.  After all, I make pretzels for a living.

I must admit making pretzels is a twisted business, but they’re delicious and good for us as long as we’re not eating pretzels for breakfast, lunch, and dinner.    Every pretzel contains a dosage of gluten - a healthy, natural, vegetarian based protein found in such grains as wheat, oats, barley, and rye.  That stuff was always soooo good for us.   Also, gluten gives us the magnificent chew in finely baked breads and rolls, and gives rise to the “al dente” in perfectly cooked pasta.   Gluten is GREAT!  What happened?

So how did gluten ascend to the top of the hit list?   Not unlike being allergic to peanuts, dairy products, and other foods, a very small percentage of the populace has a disorder called Celiac disease whereby they can’t digest gluten.   For those people, avoiding gluten is not a fad.  It actually stops the disease.   There are no typical signs for the disease, and most people who possess it have general complaints such as abdominal pain, bloating, depression, skin rash, and the list goes on.  As a result, Celiac disease is not easy to self-diagnose.  All of the symptoms can be found from a host of other disorders including overeating, indigestion, and stress.   At present, gluten is the culprit for just about every eating disorder, real or imagined, as it can sell books and put new products on the market.  Mmm…I guess that’s not so bad - stimulating the economy.   There’s also something else about gluten that wins hands down compared to the old culprits: meat, dairy, and eggs.  Gluten is “New”.   It’s a word many people never heard.  It draws attention and is a perfect bogeyman.  No doubt, in time, this mania shall pass.  Then there will be another victim -  perhaps hot dogs?   Sorry Oscar Meyer.  I do love a juicy hot dog with mustard, sauerkraut, and grilled onions, but you know you’re always vulnerable to CHOLESTEROL.   If it was my choice to pick out the next public food enemy number one, I would simply change the word from gluten to glutton.

I truly sympathize with those who have severe food allergies.  It can be very difficult to be on a restrictive diet, especially when trying to dine out.  But, for the millions of allergy free “Joe Eaters”, here are some mouth-watering, words of wisdom:  “In all things not too much,” said Socrates, and likewise, Aristotle spoke of the “Golden Mean.”  What these great philosophers were saying over two thousand years ago holds true today.  If we stay within the bounds of extremes, chances are we will stay out of trouble.  Work, play, exercise, relax, and enjoy all the pleasures of the palate…including pretzels, of course.  After all, pretzels are “Certified Gluten Enriched”.
